March Meet The Maker - Day 24 - Milestone

Trying to think what to write for today was a real challenge. When I think of milestone there are so many that come to mind:

  • My first book?
  • My first self-published book?
  • My first Secret Beadalong?
  • My first award?
  • My first published pattern?
  • My first class?
  • My first international class?

Arrghh! Each of those represent a monumentous event for me and each one are such strong memories that it's plagued me for weeks trying to narrow it down but in the end I've chosen a simple one - 9.

It's now been 9 years since I was made redundant from my job in the NHS and beading & all things bead-related became my sole job and source of income.

It was a very scary time at first and I wasn't sure if I could do it, and there have been many ups and down. but thanks to a lot of hard work, and more importantly a lot of support from everyone who has ever purchased anything from me and all the shops & groups etc who have employed me to teach, 9 years on I'm still going and still thankful to be doing so.

We're still in New York and today took a lovely walk along The Highline followed by coffee & cocktails in Kobricks Coffee Co and then some art buying when we discovered the wonderful Barbie and Ken Photos. I treated myself to the wonderful handstand photo on the top-right of my photo.

This evening we went to see some basketball at Madison Square Gardens and it was a surreal experience. Though I'm not a huge sports fan I'm used to watching sport where the main point of the event is... the sport. This was completely different and the theme of the evening seemed to be 'no second left unfilled or unembellished'. Throughout the whole event we were bombarded with noise, artifice, drama and ridiculousness. From cheerleaders rushing on as soon as there was any time-out, to t-shirt cannons, laser lights, explosions, celebrities on the big-screen, music, dancers and much more. No-one could even score without sound effects and a light-show.

Whoever puts these on needs to go watch some cricket, learn that humans don't need to have their brains filled constantly and can learn to entertain themselves for the 2 minutes when nothing is happening on the court and chill the heck out.
