New York 2011- Day 2

posted: Thursday, 10 November 2011

Another day, another breakfast at the Broadway restaurant...

Fully fed, we head over to the Upper-East side to explore Museum mile. Unfortunately our first port of call, The Cooper-Hewitt Museum is closed at the moment. Add to that the Guggenheim being closed on a Thursday and The Metropolitan Museum of Art being so packed we immediately turn around and leave, and our day of culture doesn't start off too well.

But undetered we plough on and head to the Roosevelt Island tramway which I was thwarted at last year. But judging by our luck so far, I'm not sure whether to hold out any hope of it working today.

On the way, as we're navigating the busy streets, we stop outside a shop and I suddenly realise the picture of the peacock in the window looks familiar... Last night, in the apartment we're staying in, I found an old copy of Forbes magazine (not something I have ever read before) and read this article on automata. I was delighted to see that there was an exhibiton currently in New York and meant to look up the location when I next had internet access. But standing outside the shop I realised that without even knowing it, I had found it and immediately we went inside. Wow. I was so dazzled it didn't even occur to me to take photos, so instead am illustrating it with a photo of some pages of the exhibition catalogue. If you can get to see the exhibition, newly extended to the 10th December, you must do so. The automata, jewellery and Faberge eggs included are incredible and watching the films of them moving will amaze you especially when you consider the miniature movements and mechanics taking place.

After being fully wowed, we headed off to the tramway and to our delight it was all working and soon we were flying through the air, above all of the traffic, heading to Roosevelt Island. After a walk around the Island it was back to Manhattan for some bargain clothes shopping where, as I adore colour and wear cardigans most days, I was super pleased to pick up 8 (8!) fab coloured silk cardis before heading home for dinner and bed.
