New York 2019 - Day 2 - The Vessel

posted: Wednesday, 24 April 2019

I have long been a fan of Thomas Heatherwick and when I learn that The Vessel would be open in time for my trip to New York I knew I had to try and get tickets - and fortunately I managed to.

Unfortunately I have a crippling terror of heights.

But, through the aid of modern medicine, and a lot of white-knuckled determination, I made it to the top of The Vessel today (for a few seconds at least) and it was worth it.

It's an amazing structure which cleverly leads you up and down winding paths and means you continually get to see different views and experience the surroundings in a different way.

Fortunately they only let a certain number of people on at any one time which means you can actually find peaceful spaces to stand and enjoy the views and not be stuck behind many, many people taking selfies and Instagram influencers staging photo-shoots with scant regard for anyone else.
Sadly over the last few years I've had too many trips to other places ruined by these things (as gorgeous as Christmas at Kew is I will never return). I love taking photos but always snap one and move on, make sure I don't just walk in front of people and don't take over scenic places for full photo-shoots without caring if others want to enjoy the view. I may not always get the best shot but I hope I don't impact others too much.
