Fireworks In Lewes

posted: Sunday, 04 November 2018

The book and all its changes are done and now I'm just waiting for physical copies for us to proofread to arrive.

Whilst waiting I've escaped London, and my computer, and have headed down to Lewes in advance of their bonfire night celebrations.

The main event is tomorrow but tonight is full of fireworks & fire in memory of 17 protestant martyrs burned at the stake between 1555 and 1557.

As darkness falls the sky is full of smoke & rumbling and even earplugs don't do much against the incredible noise as thousands & thousands of fireworks are lit all around town.

A crazy atmosphere of anarchy & depravity also appears...until you spot that amongst all the noise & fire there are people are ensuring the buses can still get through and no-one gets run over and there are women & men all around with brooms and even vacuum cleaners and extensions leads. The perfect level of anarchy with a big side of public safety and cleanliness attached.

The photos (including the first 2 shown here which are from a friend of mine) sadly don't capture the phenomenal atmosphere but go some way to showing what a spectacle it all is.
