Walking Over The 02

posted: Saturday, 24 October 2015

When one of my sisters suggested walking over the roof of The 02 (AKA the Millennium Dome) for her birthday I said yes immediately - and then suggested we get there using the London cable car.

It was only as the time to do it got closer that I remembered just how terrified of heights I am.

But, refusing to let that stop me (and a little bit of knowing I'd never live it down if I backed out) this evening I found myself doing both.

The cable car seemed like a good idea but it was only when we got there that I realised just how high it goes (90m or just under 300ft) and how truly petrifying it would be.

Clear glass all the way to the floor is great for a good view, but did nothing to settle my nerves, and I know it was coming up to Halloween but whoever thought the theme tune to The Exorcist was suitably music needs firing.

Once that horror was over, climbing the 02 (a mere 52m/ 172ft) began to seem like an easy option.

Walking over simply involves wearing a harness, gloves and non-slip boots and being secured to a guide rail and then you begin walking, on an odd bouncy surface, only stopping at the top to admire the view.

I was worried it would be too physical an experience but it was easy - the only downside was the torrential rain and high winds. They didn't make it any harder, but not being able to see through my glasses somewhat marred the experience - but not much!

Even though I was scared before we began I can truly say the experience was exhilarating & fun and that after about 1 minute of walking all fear left me (there's no visible drop below you until you stand on the viewing platform which is a metal mesh).

I can't wait to do it again - this time in the dry.
