Rivolis And Revelations

I'm still working away on my latest necklace and whilst I'm enjoying seeing it come together I have a constant dilemma as to what colour rivolis to use.

I'm using matte copper Delicas (number 340) and began using emerald and amethyst crystals which went really well. Since then I've added in some olivine to lighten the piece up and also some Padparadscha. But now I'm not sure whether this last colour was a good choice. But when I think about not having it in the necklace it seems there is something missing. You can read more about my thoughts on my Colour Challenge Blog.

This afternoon we took ourselves out for a comedy treat and a food delight.

First up was a show by Henning Wehn a German comedian that I have heard a lot on radio shows and seen on panel shows but never before seen live. He didn't disappoint and even had us all singing Christmas carols in German as part of the show.

Next up was a a trip to Hix in Soho. I had visited the bar there over a year ago and ever since we'd meant to return for dinner. This decision was firmly cemented when I realised they did a pre or post-theatre menu at just £17.50 for 2 courses. I love these options as they encourage me to try new things without worrying about just how much the bill will be at the end!

We began with cocktails and I opted for a Hunting Flask which was 'Jameson Whiskey infused with Kent Redcurrants, Ginger and Citrus, served on crushed ice or lengthened with boiling water' it being a cold and rainy night I went with the hot option and was really pleased. It was perfect.

To start with I ate whipped beets which were out of this world. Served with goats' curd, hazelnuts and freshly griddled warm bread, I think I could have eaten plates of this. Fortunately a bit of searching shows that it looks ridiculously easy to make and I might even have a go at making my own goats' curd using this recipe.

Next up was 'fillet of Peterhead Coley with Barra cockles and sea purslane'. The purslane was delicious, as of course was the whole meal, bitter and tasting so very green.

We were almost fully satiated, but decided to have one more drink. By now I didn't want another cocktail but definitely didn't want what are usually the only other options: water, juice or a sweet soft drink. There are times when all of these are perfect, but I wanted something that would hit my tastebuds not just dull them with sweetness or boredom and none of these would do. Actually I think a lot of the time when I order a cocktail it's simply because I know it will be a lot tastier than a soft-drink.

When I perused the menu I spotted that they sold some non-alcoholic drinks by Peter Spanton. I vaguely remembered reading about these a while back and thought I'd dive in and try the one billed as mint and bitters. Well, despite how great everything had been so far, and it was great, I think discovering this was the highlight of my evening.

Not only did the drink smell amazing, with a big hint of chocolate, mint and sparkle, but the taste was ambrosial with quinine, bitters and mint all combining in the perfect soft drink for grown-ups! I will definitely have to order myself some of these to have at home and really hope more places begin to stock them.
