Work And Wire

This morning saw Kate McKinnon's last few hours in London, before she headed off to Devon to teach, and I once again got to see London through a visitor's eyes- good and bad.

I love London and really enjoyed the past few days exploring it, learning more and questioning my knowledge of it.

One example, this morning we were travelling through Charing Cross Station on the tube, and I looked at the platform artwork, which I have seen probably thousands of times before, but suddenly l realised I had no idea what it referred to.

A bit of googling later, and I now know more, (you can see a photo of the art and read a fascinating blog post about graphic art here).

Our time spent together today was rushed but fun with some sightseeing and shoe-shopping squeezed in.

Unfortunately though, what mainly stood out was the infamous London lack of customer service.

From the bus-driver who shut the doors on us when he knew we wanted the bus and were buying a ticket, despite the fact he then sat there in traffic when he could have let us on, to the ticket staff at the train station whose attitude was "It's not my problem" when supposedly helping us print out a train ticket.

Kate nearly missed her train due to his incompetence and rudeness and he satisfiedly let us know that if that happened not only did he not care, but she would have to buy a new ticket.

Why is customer-service so bad in the UK? It drives me mad. Why is there the attitude of "the customer is in the way"? When did everyone stop caring if they provided a good service? Why does one man standing up for bad service end up with him being arrested?

Ok, rant over and onto nicer things!

Once I had Kate on her train, with seconds to spare, I headed home to get back to work.

I am away in Earnley next week teaching my Wirework Projects Class and between Kate's visit, and my laptop dying on me, I still hadn't finished getting my instructions all done.

So this afternoon was spent working on step-by-step photos and adding them to the written words.

I am still earning about my new camera, and new laptop, and it's all a technological struggle, and out of my comfort zone, but it's a sunny day, Radio 4 is on and I like working on instructions, so I'm happy to wile away the hours on such a task.

I am also working away on new instructions which will hopefully launch over the next few days in my much-delayed March newsletter (my web hosts have changed their site and in doing so have somehow managed to stop their newsletters from working)- make sure you sign up now to get the discount code.
