Terror In Lille

posted: Tuesday, 23 December 2008

Today we drove to Lille- which I have visited once before - to see the exhibit of Nordic artwork at the Palais De Beaux Arts which unfortunately was shut!

Undeterred we stil had a great day which included a vist to Le Foret Du Nord (Europe's largest book store) where of course I managed to find something to buy, a trip to Paul for macaroons (not as nice as my handmade ones!) lunch which consisted of flambeauchen and cafe gourmand. But the highlight of the day was the visit to the Christmas market and a ride on the 50m high ferris wheel

That's if you define highlight as a period of time filled with absolute terror. That's terror as in far too scared to even move my head, never mind let go of the bars! After the 3rd or so rotation I began to relax and look around at the jaw-dropping views over the town. But then they started to let others on...

I am terrifed of heights and sitting at the top of a 50m high wheel whilst the wind blew the carriage round and strange 'crunking' noises begin didn't cure me of my fear. By the time we reached the bottom I think I would have jumped out myself if it hadn't stopped for us to get off!

But I still recommend it as the views were really worth ever second of fear.
