Knives And Spoons

A day out in Hackney today (where I grew up) to visit a Midcentury Modern show on the hunt for a bookcase. Sadly there were none that were right for us but I did fall in love with an amazing vintage pottery and wood ashtray/ magazine rack (though I reasoned not enough to take up smoking again) and this sign on one of the school walls.

After being all amazed out by the wonderful furniture and art on display we headed to barn the Spoon. This is a shop I've wanted to visit for a long time, ever since first seeing some videos of him working.

Visiting the shop was a joy, even though Barn hmself wasn't there, we got to see some of his beautiful spoons and serendipitously (as they also sharpen knives for people) we got to learn all about the Boti cutting tool and see one demonstrated and 'enjoy' chewing on some betel nut, before heading out for some amazing Vietnamese food to wipe the taste from our mouths and memories.

I love watching videos of artisans and crafts people doing their work and one great resource to find links is here. You can view them by recently added or change to 'top' to see the most popular ones. I can spend hours there clicking links!
