Mdina

The sun is still shining and we're all in a good mood and open to exploring.

Today begins with an open-top bus ride around Malta, including a stop in Mdina which is a beautiful walled city. Mdina has lots of winding 'alleys' with intriguing doorways and hidden spaces - perfect for exploring and then of course sitting down for refreshment at any restaurants you come across.

The colour palette so far in Malta is a limited and beautiful one. Most of the buildings are made of limestone and many houses have wooden shutters and balconies which are mainly painted in the same green, blue or red. Occasionally you see a yellow one but that seems to be it. Most other colour shading seems to come from the paint being weather-worn rather than a different colour.

Whilst in Mdina we visited St Paul's Cathedral which is full of colour. The floor is covered with marble marquetry designs indicating tombs (and future tombs). The work was so exquisite and detailed it was hard to imagine the time and dedication taken to make them.

After Mdina it was a trip back to Valletta where we stopped for a coffee and discovered Bajtra, a liqueur made from prickly pears.
