Baltic

Not feeling too good at the moment, those late nights of beading must be catching up on me.

But this evening I put down my needle and thread to visit a restaurant I'd never been to before.

A long while ago now I first heard about 'deal-of-the-day' websites and first signed up for Wahanda (who specialise in beauty deals which is how I had my nice, cheap massage last week). Then more recently I signed up for a few more; Groupon, Living Social and TopTable Spotlight. The last website sent me an email back in July offering £40 vouchers for £20 for Baltic and I thought I'd dive in and take the risk.

So when I was looking for somewhere to go for dinner and drinks I remembered the voucher, booked a table and this evening we headed off to find it.

From the website it looked a nice, large, open place with a bar etc so when we turned up outside to see a very small shop-front my expectations suddenly dropped a level or two. But we ventured in, went behind the curtain and our view changed. The main room is huge, white and airy. From the outside you think it will be tiny, but the actual bar and restaurant run behind the adjacent road so there's plenty of room.

Once seated we began looking at the menu and I soon realised I wanted to eat just about everything offered. In fact I don't think there was a single option that didn't sound good. Whilst trying to make up our minds we ate rye bread with horseradish and gherkins. The cocktail list was just as tempting but soon we decided on a Rabarbara (Potocki wódka stirred with Martini rosato, rhubarb liqueur & Peychaud bitters) and a Ginger Fling (Jameson Irish whiskey shaken with lemon juice, orgeat syrup, fresh ginger & egg white). Both were great and eased us into making food choices.

In the end I went for Spaetzle (which was billed as fine Egg Dumplings fried with Peas and Bacon) and Paprika Marinated Coquelet with Chicory & Apple Salad, Walnuts & Garlic Sauce.

I was expecting the Spaetzle to be a dumpling as I know them (heavy, delicious and perfect in an Irish stew) but in the end it was a noodley-eggy type thing which was absolutely delicious and just what I needed to soak up some of the alcohol and the cold and rain from the night outside. My main was also delicious and fresh and the Mizeria (cucumbers in sour cream and dill) I ordered to accompany it was out of this world and something I will soon attempt to recreate.

First drinks drunk, we ordered more and, as this is a Polish restaurant specialising in Vodka, I felt it would be rude not to try at least one shot. They sell so many different flavours and types but in the end I opted for grapefruit and wasn't disappointed. The smell was so fresh and it tasted even grapefruitier than I expected. I was worried it would be sweet and fake tasting but it was pure, fresh and delightfully sour. I also ordered a Dirty Martini and it was the first time I have ever ordered one and got exactly what I wanted. A real treat! I make these at home sometimes but wanted one that was ice-cold and perfect and the barman did me proud. It was freezing and briny which was just what my tastebuds needed.

I was as pleased with it on a level with how much I am usually disappointed when I order one and get a plain martini with an olive in it. I love a plain martini but when it's not what I order it's disappointing. This was briny to perfection.

Though we were full my tasetbuds were now craving something really sweet to counteract the alcohol and brine and so we ordered poppyseed and honey cake which was tasty and tipped us over the edge into beyond full. This gave us the signal it was time to venture out into the cold and rain and head home ready for more beading the next day.
