Sweden Day 2

posted: Saturday, 23 July 2011

Today we woke up in Sweden tired and still damp.

Fortunately in Sweden it seems TV is mainly broadcast in English, with Swedish subtitles, so after a breakfast of more coffee, bread, ham and cheese we head back to the warm, dry bed to watch old episodes of Cheers until we have to head out into the rain.

Unfortunately we soon we have to leave, find the rest of the team's hotel (and the rest of the team who have flown in this morning) and play our roller derby bout.

Fortunately we are helped by more Swedish, and lots of American, hospitality and after many, many car -trips with our lovely driver, we all end up at the bout venue ready to play and have fun.

When the game was arranged it was going to be a 'B-team' game but Sweden wanted to try out their 'A-team' and so our two teams weren't evenly matched shall we say. But despite losing by 300 to 43 we had so much fun. Ignoring being hit more than I have ever been before, crashing into a climbing frame on a wall at high speed and generally being battered for the whole game I loved it all!

The crowd were behind us and the fact we kept skating, trying, dancing and laughing won them over and anytime we did get a point they went wild for us. Who knew the Swedes loved an underdog as much as the British do?

It was a privilege to play against such a good team who played so well and cleanly and deserved every point they got.

After the bout it was back to the hotel to celebrate/ commiserate with duty-free tequilla before heading off to dinner at Tusen & 2 which specialises in burgers.  I went for the Elvis which included peanut butter, banana and bacon. I am pleased to say it was delicious even if I had to leave all the bun and all the chips! But I am now the proud owner of a receipt which shows we went for the 'Elvis' and 'Heart-attack' burgers. When we die they won't need to do a post-mortem, they'll just look at the receipt and nod.

Then it was on to the after-party where lots of photos were taken but none of them fit for public consumption so instead I leave you with some more photos of Copenhagen.
